Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatments

what is panchakarma?
Panchakarma is a very special way of treatment in Ayurveda. It is a sanskrit word. Pancha means five, karma means procedures. They are vaman, virechan, basti, raktamoksha and nasya. The treatments are based on the purification or detoxification concept.Ayurveda believes in the three main principles which control the body, those are vata, pitta and kapha.
Disorder takes place in the body, when these three principles gets disturbed. Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatments are meant for removing and cleaning these toxins from the system and body. Once, the balance of three principles is restored in the body, health is regained.
Apart from the five procedures, there are many traditional procedures given to the patient under panchakarma treatments, like Pindaswed, Patrapottali Swed, Taildhara, Katibasti, Janubasti, Hrudbasti. Thus, there are nowadays almost 10-15 procedures that can be administered.

Is panchakarma treatment given to every patient?
If the disease is very new, and at a very primitive stage, many times oral medicines and good diet works well, however, in most of the diseases, where it is chronic or has frequent recurrences, panchakarma is needed and it helps recovery faster. Even though there are multiple procedures, available, all are not recommended and given to each and every person.
Firstly, the complete medical check-up of the patient is done, to understand his/her disease. Then certain procedures are selected and decided for that person. Every person does not receive the same treatment. It depends on his disorder. Also, medicines that are used in panchakarma treatment are of immense importance. The result of the treatment depends on the right choice of medicines.(oil, decogtions, herbal powders..etc)
Hence it is better to have an individual customized program or course of panchakarma always, because it gives specific treatments and also the results.Usually these procedures are of 7 days, 14 days or 21 days..
Taking a one day abhyangam or shirodhara can be just a relaxing but it can not be a panchakarma procedure.
Panchakarma treatments are scientific medical treatments and these treatments must be taken from a experienced ayurved doctor who has good knowledge of Panchakarma.

Do these treatment have any side -effects?
Yes, as mentioned earlier, since these are medical treatment they also carry a disciplined regime of food and activity, during the course, which needs to be understood and followed by the patient. Also, the therapist or doctor who is giving the daily treatment should be thorough on the subject. Failing which, side effects occur in the treatment or after the treatment, but at the same time, if procedures are performed scientifically and with all due care, the result and relief to the patient is very good.
